[DSE 英文] 文法、串法、記憶法

出路小筆

應考英文科時，大家要力求文法準確、串法正確。小筆希望略盡綿力，在撰寫有關文法和串法的文章時，加入一些記憶法，幫助各位考生。

1. discuss something v discussion about something (v = vs = versus)

We discuss something.
Example: We discussed the issue with our classmates.
Mnemonic: Discuss something --> 重要的S要寫三個。

Discussion about something
Example: Let's continue the discussion about academic stress.
Mnemonic: Discussion about -->  影像串連法：想像自己站在巨型的A字塔上面 (I stand on a giant A-shaped tower)，感覺八面威風。



*備註：Discussion on/about/of/around something 全部正確，例句在 Oxford: discussion。
Mnemonic: Discussion on/about/of/around -->  歌曲法：將 Que Sera, Sera, Whatever will be, will be 改編為 I on A of A, Whatever will be, will be。


2. next month v the next two months

Singular time word:
Next time, Tuesday, week, month, year, etc. (without the)
Example + Mnemonic:
Nancy and Mandy are going to Britain next month.

Order, space, plural time words:
The next train, page, two months, etc. (usually with the)
Example + Mnemonic:
The next two months will be full of difficulties, but Terry and Nancy will get married, and so will Tim and Mandy.



3. casual v causal

分辨 casual 和 causal 的串法：

(a) 懂得讀，自然懂得串

聆聽正確讀音：
Oxford: casual
Oxford: causal
邊讀邊拆字：
ca/su/al
cau/sal

(b) 用記憶法 + 了解詞性

句子法：
Sue wears casual clothes.
詞性：
“Cause” is a noun. “Causal”is an adjective.

記憶法可幫助大家同時記憶英文字的串法和定義，例子如下：

4. thrive on

Definition:
English: "to enjoy something or be successful at something, especially something that other people would not like" (Oxford: thrive on)
中文：「擅長」 (Cambridge: thrive)

Example + Mnemonic:
Thrive --> Three high-five--> Three colleagues high-fived Sally, who thrived on multitasking and therefore received the Successful Multitasking Award.




5. declutter

Definition:
English: "to remove things that you do not use so that you have more space and can easily find things when you need them" (Oxford: declutter)
中文：「清除、清理（多餘物品）」 (Cambridge: declutter)

Example + Mnemonic:
Declutter --> Del cutter--> We don't need any cutters. Delete the cutters from your shopping list and throw away all cutters when you declutter your room.
*把 declutter 轉成 del cutter 可以方便記憶。但請緊記 declutter 的讀音，在串寫和讀出 declutter 時，把 del cutter 換作 declutter。




6. YouTube

YouTube is so famous that no definition is needed.
Note that both Y and T should be capitalized.

Example + Mnemonic:
Imagine You use a large Tube to listen to a YouTube video, while others use earphones.
Large Tube --> Capital T

7. kindly

Definition:
English: used for telling or asking someone to do something, especially when you get annoyed (Oxford: kindly; Cambridge: kindly)
中文：(於憤怒時盡力保持禮貌) 請、麻煩 (Cambridge: kindly)

Example: Kindly keep quiet!

Usage + Mnemonic:  Please 和 kindly 不能相遇，否則會 PK (跌倒)。
*兩者並用，是常見錯誤。大家要加以警惕，以免失分。




8. touch wood

請留意 touch wood 的意思和用法！大家要正確使用 touch wood！

Definition:
English: used when you talk about your luck in the past or your hopes for the future, hoping that you will continue to be lucky (Lexico: touch wood; Oxford: touch wood)
中文：(提及過去的運氣或對未來的期盼時) 上天保佑 (Cambridge: touch wood)

Example: We will pass the exam with flying colours, touch wood.

Mnemonic: 我觸摸樹木 (touch wood)，希望帶來好運。別人嘲笑我，但我相信笑口常開，好運繼續來，所以沒有介意。




9. hence

Definition: "for this reason" (Oxford: hence)

Example:
Obesity is responsible for numerous diseases, hence the importance of maintaining a healthy weight.

Usage: 在大部分詞典例句中，hence 後緊接的是 noun phrase，例如 hence the need for something, hence the importance of something, hence the reason for something 等。

Mnemonic: "hence" 的諧音是「限時」--> 在限時內，公司的同事用 hence 造句。造不到的話，就會 no pay (與 noun phrase 同樣是 np)！
